Technology History:
Mobile phone providers in the United States incorporated text messaging capabilities into their networks in the 1990’s. However, the text message transmissions (also knows as SMS) were limited to intra-carrier communications, preventing the rapid adoption of the technology as seen in Europe and Southeast Asia.
US Carriers began in earnest to build the backend clearinghouses and gateways necessary for inter-carrier SMS in 2002. Today, mobile subscribers of all major US carriers can send text messages to handsets on other domestic (and often international) cellular networks. In fact, SMS traffic has increased 10 fold in the last 3 years.
This large and growing market is now primed to use text messaging to access content and applications, respond to promotions and sweepstakes, and make secure purchases. SMS provides a more robust interface than email for these services because of its immediacy, reliability, authenticity, and an economic model unfriendly to SPAM.
To promote the development of these applications, all major US carriers have agreed to integrated common short codes (CSC) into their networks. SMS traffic to each individual CSC is routed from the handsets through the cellular providers’ networks, to application servers for interpretation and dynamic response.
Airquake designs, develops, and implements these applications for our clients and their major accounts. Our existing platforms and ties to domestic and international cellular networks enables rapid delivery of over-the-air applications.
